THE ROOTS AND THE GOAL

When I was working for Boeing they recounted an wonderful story. Just like this august gathering, a meeting of very important people was held in USA after Russia had put a woman on the moon, Valentina Tereshkova. The Second World War had depleted all the resources at their command. Nobody really looked at Science and Technology as something important. There was a decline in number of students opting for Science especially Basic Sciences. The research was focused more on applications rather than pure Sciences. President Kennedy addressed the gathering and asked them how USA could put a man on the Moon quickly? The challenge was not a simple one. The task of putting a human in the moon involved solving many complex differential equations with a lot of unpredictable variables one dependent on other. The problem addressed by the multi disciplinary Engineers might be different from the one being addressed by the Core-Scientists. Many things need to be closely coordinated and many details were unknown (to be assumed). So great technologists from fields like Mathematics, Physics and Aeronautics came together to address issues and find solutions. The time available to them was short.

They realized ultimately that there are two fundamental things to be kept in mind while solving any problem in the respective area and that should never be lost sight of.

The first point is that the Lunar module should be able to understand its real time position with respect to earth (Where am I coming from and where am i now?)

The second point is to know the direction it should move to reach the Moon at the end of the journey. The Lunar module will disintegrate or become inconsequential or loose its orbit or lose its purpose if it loses the direction. At every point in its journey it should know the direction that it needs to go to reach the Moon. This means, with respect Moon (Goal), it needs to know where it is. Any number of obstacles on the way is not a problem as long as these two issues are taken care.

Many kinds of stellar material may be there in between. There may be different obstructions. It may be out of communication to base station on the earth at times. It may or may not be exposed to Sun. Moon is also constantly going round the earth. Still the module needs to know these two points; where it is now and where it has to go next to reach the final destination.

Similarly, at times we need to also find out where do we come from? What is the root of our Samskriti, what is the root of our capability, our knowledge. Like some body said as per evolutionary theories we are like all (Bandar ka bachcha) oÉlSU MüÉ oÉŠÉ. But if you look at our sashtras, the Upanishads, they say "uÉrÉqÉç AqÉ×iÉxrÉ mÉѧÉÉÈ"(vayam amrutasya putraaha) Right. So, we come from that kind of a root and then recognize that we are not just next step of monkeys as the evolutionist say but our root is something that is AqÉ×iÉqÉç, (amrutam- deathless). It is important that we understand, we come from that particular root, which is "deathless" and also recognize for a better future we need to create and have to achieve the goal collaboratively. There is no way, one University one group and one particular staff can get ahead leaving others behind. And more importantly it is "Samskritam" which is in focus. Those who had assembled here are the most important stake holders in the field of Samskrit. If we don't do it then there is nobody else who will do it. We have assembled at a critical moment.

If that is the concept which we have then the just like a lunar module aligned itself to the goal, asking those two questions; where am I coming from and what is my goal? Similarly if each of us can take a minute or two to express what is the goal that I have? Being a Vice-Chancellor of a Samskrit University or being in this room what is the vision like landing a module on the moon? From your own perspective, you can look at it and say what that is? And then also see where am I coming from? What is my connection to the root? So if there are obstructions, if there are issues, if there are problems, if there are several issues that we are dealing with the several students of the universities, the Finance, how do we work together? How do we teach Samskritam out of Samskritam? All of those can be handled if we can look at who am I? Where am I coming from? Where am I going? Let us begin with that. That would give us a very powerful space to re-creating in the context of this Meet. That would help us to move with velocity towards the goal.
